Laying out your future – What it’s like to do great work with great people.
How do you get your foot in the door with a big studio & what do you do once you get there? Gerrard Southam lifts the lid on what it’s like to work at Animal Logic. He offers tips & insights into what to do once you’ve got your big break & how to keep cracking once you’re in there. With over 16 years of experience & film credits that include The Narnia movies, Alice in Wonderland, The Hobbit & the LEGO movies, Gerrard will over a few tips and tricks to both improve your workflow & help with your professional development with a particular focus on the layout & camera department & how that fits into the production pipeline & how the role differs from Pe-Visualisation.


Having worked across the globe as a Generalist, Previs Supervisor and now Lead Layout Artist, Gerrard has worked at Weta, Walt Disney Productions, The Third Floor and now Animal Logic. Living and working in Sydney, Wellington, Los Angeles and Prague. An experienced public speaker he has lectured at UTS, COFA and helped mentor students as part of Animal Logic’s Intern program. He brings with him a range of production experience and has been fortunate enough to work with some the world’s top directors and artists. As a Lead Previs Artist he has helped build pipelines and delivered content to help directors better explain and refine their vision for their films. As a Layout Artist he has helped craft sequences for Local Animated Feature films, including the LEGO movies. He has a genuine passion for visual story-telling and enjoys the process of producing great content.
